Resumo

Informações sobre a epidemiologia da demência em idosos são escassas no Brasil, embora sejam fundamentais para orientar o planejamento de ações em saúde para esse segmento da população. O presente projeto tem como objetivos estimar a incidência de demência e declínio cognitivo, fatores associados (ambientais e genéticos), estudar o declínio funcional em idosos, ocorrência de transtornos mentais comuns e impacto em cuidadores informais de idosos com demência. Será realizado um estudo de corte prospectivo, com amostra de idosos de base populacional, com avaliações de inclusão e 24 meses de seguimento. A amostra será aquela obtida no projeto "epidemiologia da demência e doença de Alzheimer em populações miscigenadas no Brasil e em Cuba" e as avaliações de inclusão serão as realizadas no referido estudo. As avaliações de seguimento de 24 meses incluem função cognitiva, medidas de incapacitação, medidas sobre a organização de cuidados e de impacto em cuidadores, semelhantes às realizadas no estudo de inclusão.
