Resumo

The workshop is organized to facilitate exchange of ideas between experts from the two countries, with the objective of identifying exchange programmes and collaborative projects that are of mutual interest and can lead to long term gains for both countries. The perspective of the Indian energy needs presently amount to 160,000 MW of power generation - of which 11% is from renewable - and consumption of 150 million tonnes of oil products. With a large land area and much smaller population, the Brazilian scenario is a contrast to the Indian scenario. More than 47% of the energy needs of Brazil is met from renewable sources. Ethanol production from sugarcane is the key form of bio-energy and presently 45 billion litres of ethanol is consumed as fuel. There is also an opportunity to cater to global demand besides meeting domestic needs. But there is also a need to constantly move up the learning curve besides addressing challenges around sustainability. With energy needs set to rise to much higher levels, a massive thrust is required on efficient means of utilizing available biomass, new avenues of generating large amounts of additional biomass in sustainable manner, and recovery of energy from bio-wastes so as to make a dent across the entire gamut of needs including improved solid fuels (pellets, briquettes, char), gaseous fuels (biogas, producer gas) and liquid fuels (ethanol, biodiesel, bio-oil). Imaginative solutions will need to be found keeping in view the large population and constraint of land. (AU)
