Resumo

The new possibilities offered by dedicated synchrotron radiation facilities marked the development of experimental condensed matter physics in the last 25 years. Synchrotron radiation sources offer a very large variety of techniques, more than 30, to study and characterize various objects and this concerns many disciplines: physics, chemistry, biology, medicine, paleontology. This explains why the number of users is continuously increasing and new sources are under construction in the world. If we consider the structural biology, to day 83% of the structures solved are done with synchrotron radiation. Without synchrotron radiation, it would have been impossible to determine the structures of the nucleosome, the ribosome (Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2009) or the large virus. In the same way, groups studying spintronic use systematically X-Ray magnetic circular or linear dichroism because it is unique tool to study magnetism in non metric devices. In Asia, Europe and the USA most of the pharmaceutical, cosmetics, food, microelectronics, and oil companies are using synchrotron radiation. This is not the case today in Brazil (with few exceptions) but it will happen in the next 10 years at the condition that Brazil build, in the next few years, a modern machine (SIRIUS) able to compete with the best sources in the world because almost all the experiments described during this school are using these bright sources.
