He received a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from the University of São Paulo in 1985, and a PhD from Yale University in 1993, where he did research on adaptive control advised by A S Morse. Between 1985 and 1987 he worked in the development of real time control systems. He is a Privatdozent in the Laboratory of Automation and Control, University of Sao Paulo. From 2002 until 2004 he was with Alphatech, Inc., Burlington, Massachusetts, working on development of algorithms for tracking, sensor fusion, and cooperative control.
