Resumo

In Brazil, information related to the physical and chemical characteristics of landfilled municipal solid waste (MSW) to evaluate their potential uses as a secondary raw material or source of energy is lacking. Thus, this study aims to determine the gravimetric composition of landfilled MSW aged 24 years (MSW-24), which were excavated from Delta A Sanitary Landfill, located in the municipality of Campinas, southeastern Brazil. The MSW sample was segregated manually in 25 categories and the moisture content of each was determined. The results indicated that the landfill mining in Brazil will be mainly driven by the recycling of Landfill-Mined-Soil-Like-Fraction (LFSMF) (d < 19 mm) and soils (d >= 19 mm), since they represent together 70.506% of the composition, on dry weight, whereas the magnetic and non-magnetic metals account for less than 2% of the total dry mass. LFSMF (d < 19 mm) and soils (d >= 19 mm) have a potential to be used as a cover soil, cultivating substrate, and/or soil amendment. The combustible waste accounts for 20.407%, on dry weight. The moisture content of the landfilled MSW-24 ranged widely from 1.641 to 69.662%, on wet basis, and from 1.668 to 230.141%, on dry basis; this indicates challenges for sorting and recycling this landfilled MSW.
