Resumo

In particulate systems, energy dissipation in collisions is affected by the properties of the fluid and the particulate phases. When the fluid is a liquid, the dissipative effect is mainly attributed to the liquid viscosity, which can soften the particle collision. This effect is less pronounced in collisions in air. Although the type of fluid exerts a strong influence on energy dissipation, it cannot be considered the only factor. Consequently, it is necessary to investigate the effect of different parameters in the solid-gas and solid-liquid flow, separately. In this context, this paper evaluated collisions of steel particles in air and water from experiments in a pendulum-type experimental apparatus. The influence of the Stokes number and factors that constitute this dimensionless parameter, such as particle diameter and impact velocity, were investigated. The results were evaluated by the dimensionless dry and wet coefficients of restitution. In air, the highest coefficients correspond to the smaller particles and low impact velocities, while the opposite trend was observed in water. Drag and lubrication forces were also estimated by comparison of the experiments in liquid and air. These forces affected the motion of the particles, resulting not only in lower coefficients of restitution in liquids but also in a considerable reduction in impact velocity for the same release angle.
