Resumo

Due to the use of slender tool holders in boring and turning operations, chatter is a recurring issue that must be controlled, as it causes poor surface quality and decreases the tool life. Passive shunt circuits increase the system's damping and can be used to control chatter. In this paper, an analysis on this approach's robustness is performed, being that it can be presented as an issue in this control strategy. Two different fixation conditions are tested in an experimental setup and the effectiveness of the passive control strategy is tested. Frequency response functions (FRFs) and lobe diagrams are drawn for the four conditions: the two different fixation conditions, both with and without control. In order to examine the strategy's robustness, the same set of parameters was used for the passive shunt in both fixation conditions. The results present an increase in the structural damping with the use of passive shunt control in the first fixation condition and no change in the second condition, which portraits the lack of robustness of the method.
