Resumo

There is great interest in the development of bioactive borate glasses as they have a higher dissolution rate than their silicon-based counterparts. However, a better understanding is needed both from the structural point of view and its bioactivity. In the present work we analyze the effect of introducing small variations in the amount of P2O5 and B2O3 and the modifiers CaO and Na2O on the structure of the glass and its bioactivity. Structural characterization determined that the network is composed mainly of boron, while phosphorus is mainly found as phosphate tetrahedra without P-O-P bridges. The use of a cell culture, such as Roswell Park Memorial Institute (RPMI), as a medium for bioactivity testing was more effective than simulated body fluid (SBF), demonstrating the presence of the hydroxyapatite (HA) phase in the samples studied in this medium. Although the dissolution rate in SBF was higher, it did not show HA formation for the times studied. (AU)
