Background and objectives: The identification of microRNAs associated with common mental disorders and elucidation of their mechanistic roles may be important for developing novel targets for therapy. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the expression of 21 circulating microRNAs according to age groups and their association with common mental disorders. Methods: This cross-sectional study used data from the 2015 Health Survey of Sao Paulo with a Focus on Nutrition Study, conducted in Sao Paulo City, Brazil. The common mental disorders were assessed through the Self- Reporting Questionnaire (SRQ-20). Circulating microRNA expression was evaluated using the Fluidigm method. The Mann-Whitney test was employed to determine differences in microRNA expression among groups of individuals. Logistic regression models were employed to examine the association between circulating microRNA expression and common mental disorders. Analyses were performed using Stata version 14 software, with a significance level set at 0.05. Results: The final sample consisted of 192 adults and 193 older adults, with 16% and 29% experiencing common mental disorders, respectively. The expression of miR-130b-3p, miR-139-3p, miR16-5p, and miR-486-5p were differentially expressed between age groups. The miR-486-5p was inversely associated with the presence of common mental disorders in the older population. Additionally, older adults with type 2 diabetes exhibited lower concentrations of miR-486-5p compared to those without this diagnosis. Conclusions: These findings suggest a potential protective role of miR-486-5p against common mental disorders in older populations. The evidence identified in this study could guide future researchers in investigating these findings in interventional studies. (AU) | |
