Several characterization techniques were employed in order to evaluate the influence of Ag-rich eutectic formation on martensite thermal stability. Results of the present work showed the existence of an (Ag-rich liquid + (3) field at elevated temperatures, absent in the current Al-Ag-Cu diagram, and the formation of eutectic colonies before martensite altered its thermal behavior. Stresses on the (3 phase grains boundaries due to the Ag-rich liquid solidification decreased the Gibbs energy difference between (3 phase and martensite, resulting in a higher temperature range for Ms and Mf. However, this condition, added to stresses already present due to alloying, resulted in martensitic phases with poor thermal stability against thermal cycling, since high levels of strain in the crystalline lattice favors diffusion.
