Tailoring graded and multilayered high-strength Al sheets by Cross Accumulative Roll Bonding (CARB) process

Resumo

Achieving synergy between high strength and ductility in aluminum (Al) alloys is essential for structural applications. This study presents a novel approach for production of AA1050 Al graded composite, which combines of cross accumulative roll bonding (CARB), annealing, and final cold roll bonding (CRB). Although conventional methods were employed, a multilayered sheet comprising alternating hardened and softened layers was achieved only with merely five passes. Microstructural analysis showed equiaxed grains and partial recrystallization for the 5X-CARB + annealing route, while the final CRB processing yielded a bimodal grain distribution with improved interfacial bonding. These features resulted in yield and ultimate tensile strength (UTS) values of 251 +/- 12 MPa and 310 +/- 15 MPa, representing increases of 286 % and 156 % compared to the AA1050 Al in the annealed condition. Despite reduced ductility, a balanced strength-ductility profile was achieved. This underscores the potential of CARB-based methods in facilitating low-cost, high-performance, and high-throughput approaches in the fabrication and processing of Al alloys, which revolutionizes their industrial applications.
