Resumo

The correlation between microstructure, passive film stability, corrosion resistance, and the surface chemistry of as-cast eutectic CoCrFeNi0.82Nb0.65 and CoCrFeNi0.96Zr0.50 multi-principal element alloys was investigated in the present work. The alloys were prepared by arc melting. The microstructure of the CoCrFeNi0.82Nb0.65 alloy consisted of lamellar eutectic matrix and a proeutectic phase, whereas the Zr-containing alloy exhibited only one lamellar constituent. The corrosion resistance in 3.5 wt% NaCl was shown to be dependent on the alloy composition. The Nb-containing alloy displayed higher corrosion resistance due to the presence of the stable Nb oxide compounds in the oxide film. The lower corrosion resistance of the CoCrFeNi0.96Zr0.50 alloy was related to the more defective nature of the passive film, enriched with n-type dopants. (AU)
