Resumo

When analytical models of a physical problem are not possible, polynomial models can be helpful to correlate inputs and outputs of a physical system. Among them is the autoregressive model with exogenous input model (ARX), useful to estimate the transient output of a system given a temporal evolution in the input. Recently, the inverse ARX method, or IARX, was proposed, where the structure of the ARX method is rearranged for a single-input and single-output (SISO) model; thus, the input can be accurately estimated from output measurements with fast computation and low memory consumption. However, there are cases where the signal is significantly damped, like in heat-conduction problems where the sensor is relatively far from the heat-exchanging wall, so a delay parameter becomes necessary to allow estimating the boundary condition. In this paper, we present the inclusion of this delay parameter in the IARX method and we evaluate the quality of the function estimation in a one-dimensional inverse heat-conduction problem. We demonstrate that it is still possible to estimate relatively well the boundary heat flux even when the impulse response is damped by up to ten times; however, fast transients can be missed because the signal is naturally damped by heat diffusion. Finally, a detailed noise-effect analysis showed that, as expected, the boundary function estimate is less and less accurate as the noise increases for deeper sensor positions, becoming virtually impossible to reconstruct the function with a minor increase in noise if the sensor is relatively far from the heat source.
