Resumo

In this Letter, we report on the nonlinear dynamics of the atomic motion in a Rubidium magneto-optical trap (MOT), which is modeled by a five-parameter non-autonomous second-order ordinary differential equation in the variable z. Parameter planes constructed by considering the parameters e and wn, respectively, the modulation amplitude and the modulation frequency of the magnetic field gradient, are investigated. The dynamics of each point, in each parameter plane, was characterized using two criteria, namely the magnitude of the largest Lyapunov exponent (LLE) and the number of local maxima of the variable (zm) in one complete trajectory in the phase space. Examining these diagrams, we conclude that the system exhibits regions of multistability, where different attractors coexist for the same set of parameters. The basins of attraction of these coexisting attractors and the attractors themselves are shown. We also conclude that the system presents quint points, which are characterized by the convergence of regions with five different values of zm to them. Our study reveals the intricate nonlinear dynamics of MOT systems, exposing time instabilities driven by variations in control parameters or changes in the initial atomic conditions that form the MOT cloud. These findings underscore the complex and rich dynamical nature of MOT systems. (AU)
