Resumo

This study investigates the effects of internal fluid flow on vortex-induced vibrations (VIV) in two configurations: pinned-pinned fluid-conveying pipes and cantilevered pipes discharging fluid under harmonic support excitation. A linearized governing equation, coupled with a van der Pol oscillator to model vortex-shedding forces, is solved numerically using the finite element method (FEM). Eigenfrequency analysis via FEM robustly determines critical velocities, outperforming the Galerkin method for mass parameters beta > 0.8. In fluid-conveying pipes, travelling waves and associated dynamics induced by Coriolis effects, underexplored phenomena, intensify with increasing internal flow velocity. In pinned-pinned pipes, these waves break the symmetry of vortex-shedding forces, splitting the lock-in range into a single-frequency Lower Branch (LB), dominated by one mode, and an Upper-Edge Branch (UEB), characterized by travelling waves and multifrequency dynamics. In the UEB, Coriolis forces drive energy redistribution, exciting secondary frequencies alongside the dominant mode. In cantilevered pipes discharging fluid, internal flow reduces peak amplitudes, in the first three modes, due to Coriolis damping. Under harmonic support excitation, considering inertial and hydrodynamic correction terms due to relative motion, the primary effect of internal flow is the attenuation of amplitudes within the resonance bandwidth via Coriolis damping.
