Resumo

Antibiotics of the fluoroquinolone (FQs) class are known for their persistence and resistance to conventional water treatment methods. In this pioneering study, eco-friendly photocatalysts were developed using ZnO nanoparticles immobilized on 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl radical-oxidized cellulose nanofibers (TOCNF) towards enhancing the degradation of norfloxacin (NOR), ciprofloxacin (CIP), and levofloxacin (LVX). Photocatalytic experiments were conducted under UV-A and simulated solar light (SSL) and with different concentrations of TOCNF suspension (0.1-0.4 %wt) in TOCNF@ZnO nanocomposites. According to the results, TOCNF0.1@ZnO composite exhibited outstanding photocatalytic efficiency for degrading FQs under SSL. At a 0.25 g center dot L-1 photocatalyst dosage, 89.6 %, 87.7 %, and 83.5 % degradation efficiencies were achieved for 5 mg center dot L-1 concentrations of NOR, CIP, and LVX, respectively, after three 60-min consecutive cycles under SSL. Simultaneous degradation of NOR, CIP, and LVX (5 mg center dot L-1 each) with 0.25 g center dot L-1 of TOCNF0.1@ZnO at pH similar to 8 reached 94.4 % after 120 min. The degradation pathways of those FQs were investigated with the use of liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) and scavenger experiments confirmed the essential roles of center dot OH and center dot O-2(-) radicals in the photocatalytic process. Such findings highlight the potential of TOCNF@ZnO nanocomposites as efficient, eco-friendly photocatalysts for the removal of persistent pharmaceutical pollutants from contaminated water. (AU)
