Resumo

This study evaluated electrooxidation (EO) as a pretreatment strategy for lignin extracted from sugarcane bagasse, aiming at its application in anaerobic digestion for energy recovery. Lignin, a major structural component of lignocellulosic biomass, exhibits low biodegradability, hindering its biological conversion. EO was applied at varying current densities (20-60 mA cm(-2)) to promote depolymerization of lignin and enhance its microbial accessibility under anaerobic conditions. Results indicated that EO effectively solubilized lignin and released low-molecular-weight phenolic compounds and organic acids, improving its bioavailability for methanogenic consortia. BMP assays demonstrated that intermediate current densities (30-50 mA cm(-2)) provided the best balance between lignin depolymerization and microbial inhibition, leading to a significant increase in methane production compared to untreated lignin. Notably, the assay at 60 mA cm(-2) (L60) achieved the highest cumulative methane yield (343 mL), even surpassing the control reactor without lignin addition. Analysis of intermediate compounds confirmed the presence of potentially inhibitory molecules, such as vanillin and gallic acid; however, their concentrations remained below critical thresholds. These findings suggest that EO is a promising and scalable technique to improve lignin biodegradability, enabling its integration into bioenergy conversion processes. The application of EO can support the sustainable valorization of agro-industrial residues and enhance circular economy practices in the sugarcane industry. (AU)
