Resumo

FAPESP/LICR-HCGP is a program for human gene discovery and human coding region compilation based on a novel concept for the high throughput sequencing of human open reading frames. It constitutes part of the second phase of the ONSA initiative that builds on the success of the X. fastidiosa project. It is the first venture by the ONSA program into the highly competitive area of human genome sequencing. It also represents the first of the ONSA projects that will be an equal partnership between FAPESP and a private research organization, the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research. The project will consist entirely on the sequencing and analysis of short cDNA fragments generated preferentially from the central coding portions of expressed human genes. The fragments are termed ORESTES (Open Reading frame ESTs ) and are generated using a strategy developed and patented by the Ludwig Institute. Within the project it is aimed to assemble the data, together with existing data in GenBank and Unigene, into annotated potential complete open reading frames (pORFs). The sequence data and the pORFs will be made publicly available through deposition in GenBank and posting on a dedicate web site respectively. There will be no attempt to seek any form of patent protection for the raw sequence data or the pORFs. (AU)
