Resumo

Disorders of cortical development form a spectrum of lesions produced by insults to the developing neocortex. These conditions typically first manifest in childhood with epilepsy, developmental delay, and focal neurologic signs.Advances in knowledge always pose new challenges. Now that expressive amounts of data have been collected on malformations of cortical development, it is time to disentangle the biology and natural history. Only a clear understanding of how each MCD is produced and interact with non-malformed brain will lead to more pragmatic and successful approaches to the evaluation and treatment of these patients. The 22nd International Epilepsy Surgery Symposium will focus on these issues through objective talks on each malformation and vivid discussion of clinical cases, aiming at exposing the different views on how to apply the growing knowledge in the clinical setting. The sessions will bridge the current understanding of MCD with the main 'milestones' through which knowledge was accumulated over the past 10 years. We will have a group of experts in the field, including 33 speakers from Brazil and 25 from USA, Europe and Latin America. The Symposium will be held in Campinas, a city of easy access, 100 km from Sao Paulo, the site of one of the main University Campus of Latin America, UNICAMP. Significant amounts of exciting new data have been produced by researchers at UNICAMP and there could hardly be a better place for a meeting aiming to advance and apply this new knowledge about MCDs. It is a one-of-a-kind opportunity to integrate neuroscience with clinical neurology in the fast advancing field of epilepsy. (AU)
