Resumo

Creating friendly environments for the development of knowledge-based business has been an effective tool for local development in many regions across the globe. Route 128 in Massachusetts, and the Silicon Valley in California, are some of the best succeeded and more intensely emulated cases.In Brazil many regional initiatives aim at developing knowledge based businesses. Examples are the Digital Port in Recife, the Technology Park at Fundão, in Rio de Janeiro, the innovation clusters around São José dos Campos, Campinas, and São Carlos, in the State of São Paulo, Santa Rita do Sapucaí in Minas Gerais.Can world-class businesses be created by tackling local challenges? Public education, public health, peak hour traffic, sanitation, water supply, energy saving, exemplify themes that present challenges worldwide. Advances in technology that might contribute to these challenges are available and continue to be developed - sensors, the internet of things, drones, geo-referencing, smartphones, are just some examples.This workshop aims at discussing the challenges and opportunities presented for regional government (states, municipalities) which want to create policies that will foster science based businesses that address local challenges while creating sustainable business models based on impacting the world market.
