Resumo

Workshop description:This workshop will be divided in two complementary lines of work. The first one will rely on multidisciplinary seminars on drug discovery against tropical diseases, with talks ranging from basic parasitology to advance bioinformatics. The seminars will illustrate how to develop drug leads to control and kill pathogens causing tropical diseases such as malaria, Chagas' disease, Leishmaniasis, Dengue and ZIKA virus infection. The second line of work will focus on two practical projects (#1 and #2), in which selected students will acquire basic knowledge on bioinformatics and high-throughput systems. Project #1 - description: Yeast-based high-throughput approaches The budding yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae was the first sequenced eukaryote, and has been used for almost 40 years as a model to study mammalian gene function. It is also widely used for the heterologous expression of genes from a range of different organisms for structural and functional studies, as well as for drug discovery. The ease of genetic manipulation of S. cerevisiae and the very collaborative approach adopted by the yeast research community has allowed the construction of genome wide deletion, GFP fusion, TAP-tagged, overexpression, TS mutant and other libraries, all of which are distributed at minimum cost to yeast researchers.
