Resumo

Porphyrins and corroles are at the same time very similar and distinct species. Porphyrins are present in nature and are well known by scientists for almost two centuries (1840). Corroles were noticed only in 1965 and satisfactory synthesis processes were only described in 1999. Similar to the porphyrins, corroles are aromatic tetrapyrrole macrocycles, with the difference of one direct pyrrole-pyrrole connection. The absence of this meso-carbon alters the central cavity and the symmetry of the molecule. This small detail produces a significant difference in structural terms, which results in differentiated spectroscopic and photophysical characteristics. In this review, the spectroelectrochemistry of porphyrins and especially of corroles is addressed. The advantages of taking simultaneous spectral and electrochemical information makes spectroelectrochemistry a powerful technique for the electro-characterization of these compounds. (AU)
