Resumo

Distillation, absorption, and stripping are well-established and widely used but energy-intensive separation processes. The energy required by this type of equipment can be efficiently reduced by splitting one of the streams of liquid or vapor/gas inside the column, in a technique known as parallel streams. Until now, this technique has been applied to specific separation processes, and its benefits upon mass transfer are not yet fully understood. A comprehensive proof of the mass transfer improvement was obtained through a detailed analysis of the parallel streams' effect on the driving forces. The analysis considered para-processes with a vapor/gas phase partitioned into beta-streams of the same composition and extended the proof to subsequent trays above the first two in vapor/gas-liquid columns with one partition (beta = 2). The results obtained were tested and exemplified for processes of industrial interest, such as the recovery of bioethanol from the carbon dioxide stream produced during sugar fermentation and the methanol/ethanol distillation. The present work shows evidence that columns with parallel streams have advantages over the conventional process for various separations by increasing the mass transfer driving force. (AU)
