Docente da Universidade Federal de São Carlos desde 1980, atualmente é Professor Titular Sênior do Departamento de Engenharia Química da UFSCar. Graduado pela Escola Politécnica da USP (Engenharia Mecânica), mestre (UNICAMP) e doutor (EPUSP) em Engenharia Química, fez seu pós-doutorado em Engenharia Bioquímica no MIT, EUA. Coordena o Laboratório de Desenvolvimento e Automação de Bioprocessos (cadastrado no CNPq como LaDABio, www.ladabio.deq.ufscar.br). Suas atividades de pesquisa incluem o desenvolvimento, otimização, controle e análise tecno-econômico-ambiental de bioprocessos. Enfoca vários processos biotecnológicos industriais, como a produção de biocombustíveis (com ênfase em bioetanol e biodiesel), de vacinas humanas e animais, a protéolise de resíduos de laticínios e da indústria de soja, a produção de enzimas de interesse industrial, dentre outros produtos/processos.
