Resumo

Electrochemical biosensors are valued for their high sensitivity, selectivity, low cost, and ease of miniaturization. The integration of nanostructured materials, particularly carbon black (CB), has significantly advanced their performance. CB offers a high surface area, excellent conductivity, and functional group anchoring, making it ideal for biosensors targeting environmental pollutants, pharmaceuticals, biological markers, and foodborne contaminants. Central to these sensors are biorecognition strategies involving enzymes, antibodies, aptamers, or nucleic acids that interact with target analytes, producing measurable electrochemical signals. CB enhances these interactions by providing a conductive matrix that supports stable, efficient electron transfer. Various detection formats, including direct, sandwich-type, competitive assays, and nucleic acid hybridization, have been successfully implemented using CB-modified electrodes. This mini-review highlights recent developments in CB-based electrochemical biosensors, evaluates the strengths and limitations of different sensing strategies, and emphasizes their promising applications in clinical diagnostics, environmental monitoring, and food safety.
