Resumo

Developing explanatory models at the submicro level and transitioning through the three levels of representation remains challenging for students. The research aimed to analyse the process of table salt dissolution in water, involving both advanced and beginner students, with two objectives: (i) to identify patterns demonstrated by students in representing this phenomenon, and (ii) to present a rubric for assessing students' models regarding the submicro level. For this purpose, an activity was applied in the classroom wherein students had to make drawings to represent the dissolution phenomenon, and categories were elaborated for analysis. The results showed that advanced students required less support at the macro level to propose an explanatory model at the submicro level than beginner students. Five explanatory models regarding the rubrics were proposed based on students' data, with the last one being the most comprehensive, demonstrating the interactions between particles, which were more prevalent among advanced students. The proposed rubrics provided an opportunity to review chemical concepts, emphasising the care teachers must take when considering their students' prior knowledge. Future studies should further explore this chemical understanding of representation levels and the use of the proposed rubric, considering the different contexts and quantitative analysis. (AU)
