Avoiding explosive spalling during the drying process of refractory castables is critical. However, the role of weep holes in this process is rarely investigated in the literature. Therefore, this study analyzes their influence the drying time and on the risk of damage via numerical simulations. Varying the weep hole spacing on the steel shell affected the total drying time and drying rate, which follows a sigmoidal profile based on the materials' properties and boundary conditions. Considering also the damage risk, their optimal spacing can be obtained for a safe and efficient drying process. The potential of this tool was highlighted by considering a simulation of a previously evaluated case where the addition of appropriately spaced weep holes reduced the total heating time in 65% for a specific set of lining and also reduce the CO2 emissions. These findings offer insights into designing effective drying strategies for refractory linings based on properly spacing the weepholes on the steel shell and optimizing the heat-up curves accordingly.
