Resumo

This study presents a novel and integrated approach to enhance methane production from spent coffee grounds (SCG) by using coffee processing wastewater (CPWw) as both a pretreatment catalyst and a liquid medium. Unlike conventional methods, this work utilizes the acidogenic fermentation-derived short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) from CPWw to facilitate a thermochemical pretreatment of SCG, bypassing the need for synthetic organic chemicals. The process involved three main steps: (i) acidogenic fermentation of CPWw (either alone or with SCG) to produce SCFAs, (ii) thermal pretreatment of SCG using the fermented liquid as a diluted acid solution, and (iii) anaerobic digestion of the pretreated SCG. This integration of biological and thermal processes significantly reduced lignocellulosic recalcitrance and enhanced hydrolysis, leading to a 68 % increase in methane yield (380.93 NmL g- 1 SCG) compared to untreated SCG (226.75 NmL g- 1 SCG). Additionally, methane production rates rose by 57 %, from 15.39 +/- 0.81 NmL g- 1 SCG h- 1 for untreated SCG to 24.13 +/- 1.05 NmL g- 1 SCG h- 1 during co-digestion with CPWw. Microbial community analysis revealed key shifts, with an enrichment of cellulose- and hemicellulose-degrading genera (e.g., Hydrogenispora, Mesotoga, Longilinea) and a dominance of the methanogenic genus Methanosaeta. This study introduces a novel mechanism for enhancing methane production by leveraging naturally derived SCFAs from CPWw, offering a sustainable, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly solution for biogas production from coffee residues.
