Small deviations in the gains or losses in space division multiplexing (SDM) optical devices and fibers accumulate along signal propagation, impairing the system performance. Furthermore, random physical perturbations couple spatial and polarization modes, rendering the mode-dependent gain (MDG) and mode -dependent loss (MDL) effects stochastic. In this work, we address recently developed analytical methods to evaluate the capacity distribution of a strongly coupled SDM channel. We compare two developed methods for estimating per-mode capacity distributions: the first delivers higher accuracy but is best suited for scenarios with low mode counts, while the second offers a simpler implementation and achieves lower error rates in cases with high mode counts. Given an outage probability, the methods enable obtaining estimates for the average and outage capacities. (AU) | |
