Resumo

The BEM-II workshop to be held in Ubatuba, Brazil, aims to integrate and develop the two successful IODP-Pre-Proposals targeting the Brazilian Equatorial Margin into full proposals. BEM-II is a timely fit with the JR timeline for drilling in the South Atlantic post-2018 and offers the possibility to broaden the spectrum of big science questions to address in the area. Scientists from other member countries are already key BEM participants and we intend to engage new contributors in all aspects of the BEM initiatives: paleoceanography, marine geology, tectonics, climate change, geophysics, volcanology, sedimentology, petrology and geochemistry. The new Brazilian IODP membership and the near-future possibility of JR operation in the South Atlantic together are building tremendous scientific momentum to investigate issues to be tackled with drilling the BEM.
