Resumo

This research project consists in three main fronts of investigation, all of them having as underlying motivation the comprehension of the relations between virtue of character and phronesis in the formulation and implementation of moral actions. Firstly, I focus my attention on the definition of virtue of character as hexis prohairetike in EN II.6. In that passage, Aristotle concisely expounds the interactions between virtue of character and phronesis. Secondly, I investigate the process of habituation. Throughout EN II, Aristotle insists on the idea that virtue of character is consolidated by habit, through a process of repetition of virtuous actions; nonetheless, it is not clear how repetition of virtuous actions makes a learner become a virtuous individual. I intend to consider in detail in which way such process occurs and how it is related to the development of cognitive capacities. Finally, I scrutinize the intricacies involved in the three conditions (EN II.4) that must be fulfilled by any action properly virtuous.
