Lorena G. Barberia is Associate Professor of Political Science at the University of São Paulo (USP), where she leads multidisciplinary research at the intersection of political science, public health, and public policy. Her work integrates methods from political science, computer science, epidemiology, and economics to examine how institutions and evidence inform decision-making in contexts of crisis, inequalities and social transformation. She currently serves as Co-Chair of the Lancet Commission on Global Gun Violence and Health.Dr. Barberias recent contributions have appeared in journals such as Science, The Lancet Regional Health Americas, Comparative Education Review, the Journal of Politics in Latin America and Vaccine, addressing topics such as how politics and policies shaped the COVID-19 response of Brazil, Brazilian political elite discourse towards vaccines and democratic transitions in Latin America. She has coordinated large-scale collaborative projectsincluding the AVISA study on COVID-19 incidence and vaccine acceptanceand has led initiatives funded by FAPESP, CNPq, and international partners such as Brown University, the Gates Foundation and Wellcome Trust.At USP, she is a founding member of the IPSAUSP Summer School in Concepts and Methods. She is also a long-standing member of the Latin American Political Methodology (LAPolMeth) Network. She was the principal investigator of the São Paulo School of Advanced Science on Epidemic Preparedness. Held in July 2023, this school provided advanced training in fields ranging from epidemiology to applied mathematics to political and social sciences to students from 29 countries. Dr. Barberia holds a Ph.D. in Public Administration and Government from Fundação Getulio Vargas (FGV-EAESP), a Master in Public Policy from Harvard Universitys Kennedy School of Government, and a B.A. in Economics and Spanish from the University of California, Berkeley.
