Resumo

Conventional Spin-Echo (CSE) T2 Weighted (T2W) and Free Liquid Attenuated Inversion Recovery (FLAIR) techniques are frequently used to detect myelin sheath tears in Multiple Sclerosis (MS). We compared both techniques quantifying the target area, brightness and lesion contrast of previously recorded MS images. A set of 52 images from 26 patients kwon to have MS lesions were selected. These 52 images were obtained from all individuals using both CSE T2W and FLAIR techniques. In addition, 5 experts specialized in radiology and with experience in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the nervous system qualitatively analyzed the diagnostic sensitivity of both techniques. There were 44.52% more pixels on average in the lesion area for samples analyzed via the FLAIR technique versus CSE T2W. There was a 29.85% more contrast and 29.85% more brightness in FLAIR as compared with CSE T2W. From the two techniques were evaluated FLAIR was superior to CSE T2W (Student's t-test, p = 0.0001). The 5 experts detected lesions in 24.8 +/- 1.79 (mean +/- SD) images (95.38% of sensitivity) obtained via FLAIR, while only 22 +/- 2 images (86.97% of sensitivity) via CSE T2W technique. The FLAIR technique was shown to be superior to CSE T2W for all of the evaluated parameters, making it the preferable imaging technique to MS diagnosis. (AU)
