Resumo

Barium titanate (BaTiO3) ceramics co-substituted with Nickel and Zinc with general formula BaTi1-xNixZnxO3 (x = 0.0, 0.02, 0.04, and 0.08) were synthesized by a microwave-assisted solid-state reaction method. The tetragonal structure was found in both the pure and co-substituted samples. The local distortion of the perovskite structure caused by the co-substitution leads to a decrease in the tetragonality (c/a ratio) of the BaTi1-xNixZnxO3 ceramics. The local structural distortion is linked with a compositional fluctuation resulting from the co-substitution, which leads to a diffusive phase transition and a significant decrease in the Curie temperature of the sintered samples. The Curie temperature drops from 123 oC for pristine BaTiO3 to 104 oC for 8% co-substitution. It was found that the electrical conductivity increases with the co-substitution of Nickel and Zinc, and the conduction mechanism is explained by the nearest neighbor hopping model. (AU)
