Resumo

The development of separation units in a biorefineryis a taskof high complexity. There is a need for experimental investigationsand modeling to enable knowledge about how a bio-molecule interactsin a mixture of common solvents. In this context, the study of phaseequilibrium can provide valuable information. For this reason, thiswork presents experimental data of the solid-liquid-liquidequilibrium for the mixture of water +1-butanol + xylitol in the temperaturerange between 283.15 and 323.15 K. The modeling part uses the NRTLmodel to correlate the experimental data generating binary interactionparameters. The distribution coefficient of water and 1-butanol alongwith the separation factor indicates that the extraction of xylitolfrom the binary solution of 1-butanol + xylitol can be successfullyaccomplished by using water as the extracting agent. The NRTL modelperformed successfully in correlating the experimental data with averageabsolute deviations in the mass fraction composition of less than1.80%. (AU)
