The paper presents the procedure to derive a small signal dynamic model of the DC link capacitor voltages in a cascaded multilevel inverter (CMI). The model allows to quantitatively design a closed loop, linear, multi-input multioutput (MIMO) controller for the DC link voltages. Differently from many previously presented controllers, the one discussed in this paper is able to achieve a predefined speed of response and damping, minimizing, at the same time, the cross-coupling among the different voltage regulators. The effectiveness of the solution is proven by means of small signal analysis, simulation and experimental tests on a prototype converter. (AU) | |
