Knee osteoarthritis is a leading cause of pain and disability worldwide. Several factors may contribute to knee pain during activities in osteoarthritis patients. The aim of this study was to determine whether modifiable physical and behavioral factors (body composition and pain catastrophizing) are more strongly associated with knee osteoarthritis pain during activities than non-modifiable factors (structural damage, age, and sex). Methods: Participants aged >= 40 years with a diagnosis of knee osteoarthritis were included. Structural joint damage was assessed according to the Kellgren/Lawrence Scale. Participants completed the WOMAC Pain Subscale and the Pain Catastrophizing Scale. They also underwent whole-body absorptiometry. Body mass index (BMI) and four lean and fat indices were selected as indicators of body composition. A backward multiple linear regression model was used to explore the association between pain intensity during daily activities (dependent variable) and sex, age, structural damage, and indicators of body composition (independent variables). The significance level was set at 5%. Results and discussion: a total of 216 participants were included in the study. The regression analysis indicated that total body fat mass percentage and pain catastrophizing predicted 21% of the pain score (p < 0.05). These modifiable factors were significantly associated with pain intensity in knee osteoarthritis, while other modifiable and non-modifiable factors were less relevant to pain intensity. Conclusions: The modifiable factors body fat percentage and pain catastrophizing had greater relevance for knee osteoarthritis pain during activities than the non-modifiable factors analyzed. Interventions should focus on improving these elements for managing knee osteoarthritis pain. (AU) | |
