The advantages of a dissolved air flotation (DAF) system arise from its characteristic of being a high rate and compact treatment process, demonstrating significant efficacy in eliminating diverse contaminants from both drinking water and municipal wastewater. Despite its potential, the application of DAF for municipal wastewater treatment has received little attention in the literature. In this context, this paper aimed to investigate DAF system as a post-treatment of anaerobic effluent at a pilot-scale and its performance in removing suspended solids, turbidity, color, chemical oxygen demand and phosphorus. Different operating conditions in the contact and separation zones of the flotation unit were evaluated. The DAF process efficiency remained relatively stable when the operating conditions (hydraulic loading rates and contact times) were changed, demonstrating the system capability to deal with different loading situations, which are frequently experienced at full-scale municipal wastewater treatment plants. The operating condition characterized by hydraulic loading rates of 106 m center dot h- 1 in the contact zone and 8.38 m center dot h- 1 in the separation zone showed removal performances of 84.8 f 0.8 % for turbidity, 86.2 f 1.4 % for particulate chemical oxygen demand, 79 f 5.7 % for total suspended solids, and 47.7 f 0.3 % for phosphorus. The results indicated the capability of DAF to remove efficiently several physicochemical parameters from municipal wastewater and also valuable support to determine adequate operating parameters for DAF application for secondary effluent treatment.
