Resumo

Melanoma is the most aggressive skin cancer, originating from melanin-producing melanocytes, it is highly metastatic and challenging to treat. Light-based therapies such as photodynamic and photothermal treatments are promising but limited by melanin's light-absorbing properties. Optical clearing agents (OCAs), which promotes refractive index matching, can enhance these therapies by improving light penetration. In the present study, we analyzed the effect of OCAs in a cutaneous melanoma model by obtaining the attenuation coefficient using optical coherence tomography. A reduction of up to 43% in the attenuation coefficient was observed in melanoma after OCA application, confirming their effectiveness in decreasing light attenuation, allowing deeper light penetration into the tumor.
