Physicochemical and Biological Properties of ZnO-Incorporated Natural Rubber for Potential Wound Dressing Applications

Resumo

Antibiotic resistance has driven the search for effective alternatives in wound dressing development to reduce infection risk. In this context, incorporating metal particles into natural polymers has gained attention due to the synergistic properties of this combination. This study explores the integration of natural rubber (NR) from Hevea brasiliensis with 2%, 4%, and 8% zinc oxide (ZnO) particles, known for their antibacterial activity and ability to promote tissue repair, while maintaining the material's mechanical strength and biocompatibility. SEM analysis revealed that incorporating 2% ZnO into NR induced surface striations, potentially enabling sustained release. The addition of 2% and 4% ZnO did not alter the swelling capacity of NR (46%) after 168 h. ZnO incorporation progressively enhanced the material's tensile strength and Young's modulus without compromising usability. Antimicrobial assays with crystal violet showed inhibition of Staphylococcus aureus, while in vitro tests indicated cell viability above 80% after 72 h of culture. These findings suggest that NR-ZnO composites are promising as low-cost, effective wound dressings. (AU)
