Land use change (LUC) significantly affects soil biogeochemical processes, including losses of soil organic carbon (C) and nutrients in agroecosystems. This study evaluated the effects of LUC from the conversion of degraded pastures (low-input, LP) to intensified pastures (high-input, HP) and sugarcane (SC) on C and nutrient stocks in soils with contrasting texture in S & atilde;o Paulo State, Brazil. After two years of implementing the intensified treatments (HP and SC) from LP, soil samples were taken to evaluate the effect and magnitude of intensification and LUC on soil C and nutrient stocks [nitrogen (N), plant-available (Presin) and organic phosphorus (Porg), calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), and potassium (K)] at 0-10, 0-30, and 0-50 cm soil layers at two experimental sites: Sorocaba (i.e., clay-soil site), and Brotas (i.e., sand-soil site). In the clay soil, N stock in HP was significantly greater than in LP at 0-50 cm (6.64 vs. 6.12 Mg ha(-)1), and K stock in HP was greater than LP at all depths. Ca and Mg stocks were greater (10-25%) in HP and SC than in LP at 0-10 and 0-30 cm. However, SC showed a significant reduction (7%) in soil C stocks compared to LP in the topsoil. In the sand-soil site, Presin, Ca, and Mg stocks were greater in HP and/or SC than in LP, while Porg was lower for those land uses (8-34%). These results indicate that while intensification increased nutrient stocks, it led to C and Porg losses, highlighting the need for sustainable management strategies to mitigate soil degradation.
