Resumo

The coast of Pernambuco was affected by an accidental oil spill in 2019, with recurrences in the following years, highlighting the urgent need for impact assessment studies and the development of future management plans. In this context, the biodiversity of crabs belonging to the Mithracidae family, highly representative of coastal reefs, was monitored based on material collected between 2017 and 2019 (pre-spill) and in 2022 (post-spill) in two areas of Pernambuco. Species richness, abundance, and diversity varied significantly across years and between study sites. Results showed that Suape Bay exhibited higher species richness and abundance of Mithracidae crabs compared to Carneiros Beach prior to the oil spill. After the oil spill, Suape Bay experienced an increase in species richness but a decrease in individual abundance, while Carneiros Beach showed a decrease in species richness and an increase in individual abundance, primarily driven by a significant increase in the abundance of Mithraculus forceps, a key species in the monitoring carried out. Diversity indices remained stable in Suape Bay throughout the sampling period, whereas a significant reduction was observed in Carneiros. Carneiros was probably more severely impacted than Suape as a more exposed area may have received a greater load of oil, and despite being located within an environmental protection area, Carneiros is experiencing intense impacts from tourism.
