Resumo

A new rheophilic species of Porotergus Ellis, 1913 is described from the rapids of the Coppename and Suriname rivers in Suriname, as well as the Mana and Maroni rivers in French Guiana, based on molecular and morphological evidence. A Maximum likelihood phylogenetic analysis of a concatenated mitochondrial and nuclear dataset (2946 bp) supports the monophyly of Porotergus, placing the new species as a sister lineage to P. gymnotus from the Essequibo (Guyana) and Maroni rivers. Species delimitation using molecular approaches - including reciprocal monophyly supported by Bayesian inference, DNA barcoding average divergence (ranging from 3-10.3%), tree-based GMYC and mPTP, as well as distance-based ABGD and ASAP - consistently identifies the new taxon as a distinct evolutionary lineage, which is assigned a unique Barcode Index Number (BIN: AED3868). Morphological differences further support its recognition as a distinct species, with diagnostic characters including: an unelaborated chin; a translucid anal fin with scattered dark chromatophores; the presence of scales along the anterodorsal portion of the body extending to the origin of the dorsal electroreceptive filament; 148-160 anal-fin rays; and a higher number of premaxilla teeth (nine). Our data suggest that the Amazon basin is the ancestral origin of Porotergus, with dispersal into the Guianas via either the Rupununi Portal or the Jari-Maroni connection. Within Porotergus, habitat preferences vary from deep channels to high-energy rapids, with the new species representing a lineage specialized for rheophilic habitats. This discovery increases the number of described Porotergus species to eight and highlights the role of rapids as centres of diversification and endemism in Neotropical fish species. http://zoobank.org/urn:lsid:zoobank.org:pub:1EC4AFF7-CFF0-47A6-A87D-829C73CDF614 (AU)
