Resumo

The Serra Geral in Brazil resulted from an intense magmatic event that emplaced extensive basaltic flows across the western portion of Gondwana supercontinent during the Cretaceous period, covering vast areas of presentday South America and Africa. This study aimed to determine whether highly weathered Oxisols still retain geochemical and mineralogical signatures sufficient to differentiate variations among basaltic and trachyandesitic parent-material. For that, five Oxisol profiles and their rock substrata, developed over distinct effusive lithotypes of the Serra Geral Group, were sampled along the Third Plateau of Parana State, within the Serra Geral North-Center Subgroup formations, Brazil: P1-up to 4.0 m; P2-6.6 m; P3-10.5 m; P4-7.0 m; P5-4.5 m in depth. Analyses included soil texture, total elemental concentrations in both soil and rock, and X-ray diffraction (XRD) of the rocks. In addition, mineralogy and the crystallographic properties of the clay fraction were determined. Clay concentrations (g kg-1) ranged as follows: P1-788-913; P2-613-788; P3-400-850; P4-213-888; P5-391-758. The mineralogy of the effusive rocks in P1, P3, P4, and P5 was dominated by plagioclase and augite, whereas the rock underlying P2 exhibited pronounced quartz peaks. Based on total-rock SiO2, ZrO2, TiO2, and P2O5 contents, four distinct lithotypes were identified. The predominance of kaolinite in all profiles is consistent with the advanced degree of weathering typical of Oxisols. Despite intense pedogenic alteration, key elemental and mineralogical markers persisted, supporting the hypothesis that the parent material exerts a lasting influence on soil development. (AU)
