Resumo

One main strategy to reduce CO2 emissions of cement industry is clinker replacement by SCMs. However, the addition of SCMs affects chemical reactivity and water demand of blended compositions, influencing mechanical and environmental performances of cementitious products. This work evaluates the efficiency of an OPC and six Portland-pozzolana cements. The combined water fraction (chemically combined/mixing water), cwf, is proposed as a binder efficiency index which presented a strong correlation with mechanical strength of mortars. Additionally, the study indicates that the environmental impact of mortars (carbon intensity) is not only related to CO2 footprint of cement, but also with cwf index. (C) 2020 Elsevier Ltd.
