Resumo

With computers being everywhere, used for virtually infinite purposes, and by many people, new interaction possibilities emerge. However, the intersubjective aspect of these new interactions is often neglected, especially the role of imagination in interaction design. With an enactivist perspective, we characterize imagination as a process of coordination that integrates current and past experiences with perceived possible future actions. This article investigates how imagination occurs in the Aquarela Virtual system, designed and developed during the COVID-19 pandemic to allow children to interact remotely, simultaneously, and collaboratively with elements and audiovisual animations inspired by the popular Brazilian song Aquarela. We conducted a thematic analysis of the video transcribed actions of one 5-year-old child interacting with two remotely situated colleagues through the system. As a result, we identified three main themes: 1) Interaction, 2) Identification, and 3) Embodied Imagination. We found that imagination was manifested during the interaction mainly through an active engagement of the body that is present and constantly in movement, manipulating physical objects that are part of the system. As implications for design, our results suggest freedom to explore possibilities of interaction and action, as well as emergent playfulness, made it possible to observe the phenomenon of embodied imagination.
