Resumo

Metallic nanomaterials have attracted much attention lately due to the vast applications of these materials in catalysis, active surfaces, and others. Polymeric aggregates may be an option to act as templates for designing and building metallic nanoparticles. Depending on the polymer, the final particles may present different features than those obtained by the traditional synthetic method. Reversible Addition-Fragmentation Chain-Transfer (RAFT) polymerization allows the synthesis of tailored amphiphilic copolymers that aggregate in many morphologies and sizes in aqueous media, depending on the molecular structure of the copolymer. Such aggregates can serve as templates for metallic nanoparticles. Herein, RAFT was used to synthesize amphiphilic copolymers (polystyrene-block-poly(acrylic acid)-PS-b-PAA) prone to form aggregates in aqueous media and act as templates for silver nanoparticles. Metallic cations bound to the surface of the aggregates due to coulombic forces were then chemically reduced to provide nanostructured metallic silver materials. Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS), UV-Vis spectroscopy, and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) characterized such materials in depth, and their bactericidal properties were tested. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of the generated materials was assessed against E. coli, S. aureus, and B. subtilis, and it was shown that the templated nanoparticles were at least 4-fold more effective against the bacteria tested than the non-templated silver nanoparticles. Two closely related copolymers with different hydrophobic/hydrophilic ratios were used to synthesize silver nano-particles, resulting in different clustering and antimicrobial activity. PS-b-PAA aggregates templating increased the antibacterial activity of silver nanoparticles; therefore, such an approach should be further explored. (AU)
