Resumo

This proposed workshop focuses on understanding the social impacts of large infrastructure projects in the Brazilian Amazon from an interdisciplinary perspective. The workshop brings researchers from Brazil and the United States together to achieve two primary goals. First, workshop participants will disseminate results of previous research on the Belo Monte Dam to students at FCA as well as the wider community. Second, participants will discuss plans for a joint research proposal to be developed and submitted as part of a FAPESP Young Investigator Grant. The proposal will focus on issues of development, social policies, and impacts of large-scale infrastructure projects on population dynamics and land use and land cover change. The proposed project uses mixed methods and an innovative longitudinal design involving household surveys, semi-structured interviews, and ethnographic data that have been collected with rural and urban populations since 2010. The project will enable the researchers to understand both the short- and long-term social impacts of the Belo Monte Dam as well as other infrastructure projects on the region including the Belo Sun Mine and other similar as hydropower dams, mining and large granaries and ports for commodities.
