Resumo

Fingerprint image quality evaluation is an imperative for identification, classification, and recognition tasks. Different noise types can occur in a fingerprint image and may compromise its quality. Approaches have been adopted as to develop a pertinent combination of fingerprint quality evaluation techniques. Notwithstanding, it is difficult to obtain a universal solution for distinct datasets. A new fingerprint image quality indicator, based on directional information inherent to fingerprint ridges, denoted as neighborhood strengthness homogeneity (NSH), is proposed and evaluated in this work. Comparisons to Fingerprint Verification Competition (FVC) datasets, as well as the NIST Finger Image Quality (NFIQ) index, demonstrate the applicability of the proposed index. (AU)
