Compressibility Effects in Airfoil Secondary Tones

Resumo

Numerical simulations are carried out to investigate the flow features responsible for secondary tones in airfoil noise at a moderate Reynolds number. Simulations of flows around a NACA 0012 airfoil are conducted for freestream Mach numbers ranging from 0.2 to 0.4 at 3 deg. angle of incidence and Re-c = 5 x 10(4). Results show that noise emissions have a main tone with equidistant secondary tones, as discussed in literature. It is shown that compressibility modifies mean and unsteady flow properties, impacting the frequency and amplitude of the dominant tone. On the other hand, the frequencies of the multiple tones are shown to be self-similar based on the boundary layer thickness. Finally, transient linear analysis for the different Mach number also present multiple tones at frequencies similar to those in non-linear simulations. The system receptivity and amplification of multiple frequencies eventually lead to their non-linear interaction, resulting in complex vortex dynamics on the suction side. (AU)
